The one day Inca trek to Machu Picchu

You want to do the Inca trail but you are not keen on camping? No problem at all.

There is an option to do a one-day hike to Machu Picchu. That was perfect for me. The hike goes for roughly 6 hours and is approximately 12 km long. Bear in mind it can be pretty steep at times. It is amazing to experience the excitement of hiking to the magic place Machu Picchu. After an exhausting day, the bus will take you to Agua Calientes, where you can relax, have some Pisco Sour and one of the delicious Peruvian dishes, sleep well and get up early in the morning to see the sunrise at Machu Picchu. Don’t worry, now you can take the bus up there.

The tour started on the train from Ollantaytambo to Agua Calientes. The train is very comfortable, they serve some snacks and something to drink. My recommendation is to use the bathroom before you leave the train for your hike. You will get off at km 104 where the fun begins.

Check in on the entrance at the Inca trail and start embracing the beautiful scenery and some smaller Inca sites on the way.

Can you see the little hut in the photo below? That’s where you can rest and enjoy your power snacks. Just make sure you take your rubbish with you. You don’t want to leave it in that amazing place. Let’s respect mother nature.

After a while you will walk through the rainforest. We had just a tiny bit of rain which was actually really nice and refreshing on our skin. Have a rest at the waterfall:

Now you are getting hungry for lunch…but wait, you should go up all the stairs from Winay Wanay first. Once you reached the top you have an amazing view and can get some rest strolling along at this Inca site.

On your hike, take it easy and have a look around, you will see beautiful flowers on the trail:

Now you almost made it…the only thing left is to climb up the oh my god stairs. Pack everything into your bag and get ready. You have to imagine you climb up a ladder. The stairs are very steep and narrow. Once you are on the top you reached the Sungate. I remember as one of the girls in our group arrived at the Sungate before me and got so excited when she saw Machu Picchu, she was screeming…”oh my god…I can see Machu Picchu”. I got goose bumps all over me. Once arrived at the top I felt pure happiness, had teary happy eyes and the best view ever. The clouds started to move and the sky turned blue. The magic place Machu Picchu, here I am. My dream became true.

If you haven’t been there, you should seriously consider having Machu Picchu on your bucket list. If you want to experience the 4 days Inca trail experience, go for it. If you want to hike but don’t like camping, go for the one day hike option. Great experience and comfort.

Seeing Machu Picchu was the greatest dream of mine come true.

In my next post I will share some photos and stories from Machu Picchu Inca site in the early morning. Get ready for a slightly different sunrise in a magic place.
